Black Spanish is believed to be a hybrid, an accidental cross between Vitis Aestivalis and an unknown Vitis Vinifera pollen donor. It has been grown widely across the Eastern United States, as well as parts of Europe during the Phylloxera epidemic of the late eighteenth century. It is widely believed noted viticulturist T.V. Munson experimented with the grape in Denison, Texas.
